In Flight: Perseverance Rover's Interplanetary Sound

November 18, 2020

Data for the 60-second audio file was collected on Oct. 19, 2020, during an in-flight checkout of the Perseverance rover's camera and microphone system on the journey to Mars. The subdued whirring is from the rover's heat rejection fluid pump.

This is a colored image taken by the Mastcam-Z camera that confirmed the rover had retained a rock core in the sample tube held in the drill at the end of its robotic arm. The acquired sample of the rock core, which is slightly thicker than a pencil, the rover vibrated it to clear any material stuck between the coring bit and the sample tube within the bit.
