A Bear Lookalike on Mars

This image taken in December 2022 by HiRISE on MRO appears to show a bear's face on the Mars' surface, made up of a hill, craters and a circular fracture pattern.

A hill with a V-shaped collapse structure, two craters and a circular fracture pattern — possibly the remains of a buried impact crater — appear to form the face of a bear on the Mars surface. This image was captured by HiRISE aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on December 12, 2022.

This HiRISE image shows a portion of interior layered deposits (ILD) in Juventae Chasma. Juventae Chasma is a large depression near the equatorial canyon system Valles Marineris. The scene is along the top of a mound of layered deposits on the floor of Juventae Chasma. Dunes are seen in the low-lying, darker regions. Very fine layers are also seen (see subimage, approximately 1 km across). Understanding what kinds of materials formed the layers, how they were set in place, and how they have evolved will provide insight into Martian geologic history.

Geologically young gullies are a prime target for the HiRISE camera. Gullies are located in a variety of settings and are found all over Mars. This "ring trough" or eroded pit crater, is located in the rugged southern highland terrain known as Noachis Terra. The HiRISE image shows the layered, boulder-rich wall rock facing to the northeast and gullies that are transporting material downslope. The material collects into debris aprons along the walls, which often exhibit narrow channels along its surface.
